Who am I and why am I blogging?

Well. Where to start… I guess the introduction is the first step. Sounds easy. But it is not. Why? I am not a huge fan of telling people to much about me or putting pictures of myself or my family online. I feel like in our times of the “put-everything-about-your-life-and-the-life-of-others-on-Facebook-Twitter-and-so-on” we actually share too much about ourselves and we loose control about those info too easily. But I feel like you will get an idea about who I am if you follow my blog in the future. And I do understand, that as a blogger you have to share certain information. So here is what I am happy to tell you:

I am a woman. Sometimes I am strong, sometimes I am not. Sometimes I am disciplined and sometimes I give in. I love my two wonderful kiddies (a boy and a girl) and I adore my husband, who is also my best friend. We live in Down Under (Australia that is) after we moved here just about 10 years ago from what I call Up Over (Switzerland that was). Quite a change but it was totally worth while. So here is my personal issue with blogging in English: it is not my first language and I know I am making mistakes. But you know what? As long as you still get what I want to tell you, it’s okay, right?

So by now you know that I am a woman (one of the subjects I will blog about). And that I have two kids and a husband (another subject I will blog about). We also have pets (that might be another subject to blog about). I call it a zoo and they do drive me crazy sometimes… And we home-school. And this will probably be one of the main subjects of my blog. A subject I already wrote about in one of my first posts. It makes us different, here, where we live and by being different you open the door for oh so many comments… And this opens doors for oh so many blog posts…

Okay, I don’t want to loose myself here… Where were I? Ah, still introducing myself… So I covered the here and now basically. Maybe it’s time to give you a little inside in where I come from…

As I said: I am a Swiss woman, a mom and a wife, who now lives in Australia. I grew up in the mountains, in a little town which was rather quiet during the summer time and then turned into this crazy busy ski resort during winter. I was a happy child and besides growing up in a big house with a big garden I was also growing up with horses, dogs and cats (and all sort of other animals my mom fostered every now and then). I traveled and always loved doing it as I felt (and still do) that it opens your mind. I never got a University degree, although I was studying at a certain point but I felt like the life outside University was more for me and so I by coincident started working freelance for sport events (Media) and loved it. All my life I loved writing and I also love people and their stories. I did a bit of writing back then, but my work was more admin or organizational. It was the writing that I always loved but somehow never really made into a job. On the side I also worked as a dance fitness instructor (does Jazzercise ring a bell?), but that side was more for my fun than for work. Although I am no longer working as a Jazzercise Instructor I still love my daily workout routine and consider myself as pretty active.

I think I covered what I feel is essential to know about me at this stage and in doing so basically also gave you an idea about what my blog will be all about.

A Momma’s View will be about Life. My take on life. It will be about what I feel and think, my life as a woman and as a mom, as this is what I do now. About things that make me laugh and cry, happy and angry. It will be about my dreams as well, about my fears and about my worries. For me, for my kids, my family and the world we live in. Exercise plays a big role in my life and so does eating, so I am pretty sure that those subject will get covered a couple of times as well. I will share with you my take on homeschooling and the issues you have to deal with because you are not normal and the preconceived ideas people have about homeschooling parents and home-schooled kids. I guess that will probably be my most important subject… But who knows, as I am only just getting started, right?!

I do not have a single degree. And I consider myself as “research lazy”. So please don’t expect me to write a well researched blog as you would be disappointed. My posts will come straight from my heart, my head, maybe my soul.

So this is me. These are my thoughts, this is my blog-world. Thank you all for sharing my journey with me. I hope it will be a great one.

Cheers 🙂

  1. I commend your courage in blogging in a language that isn’t your mother tongue. English is a crazy language to get your head around, but speaking, living, reading and writing in it will sharpen your skills, and there are great resources out there to help you. I highly recommend Grammar Girl, who has a blog and a great podcast. Her style is friendly and helpful, and I learn a lot from her, even though English is my first language, and I’m pretty proficient in it. I’m not sure I could write even a coherent paragraph in any of the other languages I’ve studies, though!

  4. The first thing I thought of when I started reading your blog is “wow, she has so much to say.” My introduction is about one paragraph. I’m smiling at myself as I write this because there I go comparing myself again. Your blog is charming. It makes me want to read and know more. I have moved from one country to another (and about to do it again) so I know what that is like. I look forward to reading more about your life.

  5. This was a lovely introduction. As someone who moved a lot as a child, I understand how difficult it is to write in a language that is not your native tongue. But you seem to have a better handle on the English language than a good amount of native speakers anyway! 🙂

  6. Great job. Reads like a dream! Love it. English is not my first language either. Nor my second. It’s actually the third. I understand what you are going through…

  9. Gruezi – Swiss German is so difficult to understand even for your German speaking neighbors! So I am glad you are writing in English 🙂 Having expatriated myself from Germany to the US many years ago, I am curious to know what made you and your husband head for Australia? I am way overdue checking out Australia and New Zealand to find out for myself 🙂

    • Ja hallo und ein gutes neues Jahr! Oh I guess it was assimple as opportunities. Having said that… We spent time down here before for work and always loved it. Something just clicked, you know… It is the distance to everything else and just the amazing diversity and the space here. It is just a beautiful country…

  10. This is a fine introduction to your readers- probably better than the re-introduction I did a while back!
And, yes, I do agree that we can share too much information in this age. There’s a time and a place, y’know?

Australia’s lovely- my cousin once lived there.

Anyways, thank you so much for taking the time to support me and my blog. It means a lot to me. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a blog-world to explore.

  11. Thanks for sharing! Any of those topics are interesting but I’m especially interested in your homeschooling blogs (which I will definitely read more of) because I was homeschooled in Alaska and it’ll be so much fun to see homeschooling from a Swiss Aussie’s perspective, especially since each individual’s is already so different because of the nature of homeschooling.

    • That sounds very interesting. I have to say though, that I don’t blog a lot about the schooling itself, more about what goes on around it. But if you feel like it, I would be happy for you to write a guest post for my blog about your experience of being home-schooled? You can find some similar posts about it under Features – Guest Bloggers and then Mary – Trees of Transition. I would love it if you could do that. Just email your post to me (amommasview@gmail.com) and I will post it on my blog and link back to yours.

  13. Glad to meet you, Momma. I am from CA, and am going to Australia this December to be with a blogger friend, Carol Sherritt. I’m so excited! Anyway, I found your blog from Willow and her from Purplesrobinrecovery, and her from Gary from Fictionfood. I’ve had fun blog hopping today. A friend and I are writing a book about Transformational Blogging, and it sounds like your blog is doing just that. I love it and will be back. 🙂
