Scallops – Did You Know…

… That a scallops swims by quickly clapping its shell open and shut. This makes a water jet that pushes the scallop along. And this makes them pretty special as unlike other bivalves like mussels and clams, they have the free-swimming ability.

I’m sure you know that they are animals. Scallops are in the Phylum Mollusca, a group of animals that also includes snails, sea slugs, octopuses, squid, clams, mussels and oysters.

Scallops have about 60 eyes that line theirΒ mantle. These eyes may be a brilliant blue color, and allow the scallop to detect light, dark and motion.

When you eat a scallop you actually eat the adductor muscle…
